Small HPPs

In 1991 "The Scheme of Small HPPs Development in Armenia" was developed, including 371 small HPPs with total capacity of 392MW and annual energy output of 1177 million kWh.
Besides, the majority of the small HPPs built before 1998 have been privatized - 14 from 25. As the experience of their operation shows, their technical condition has been improved and the output has increased by 25%.

Construction of small HPPs (SHPP) in Armenia is a leading course of action towards development of renewable energy sector and securing of energy independence in Armenia.

The majority of SHPPs in RA which are being designed, under construction or operation are derivational stations on natural water flows.

As of the 1st of January 2017, electricity was generated by 178 small HPPs, with about total 328 MW installed capacity and 880 million kWh annual average electricity actual supply. In 2016 the generation of the electricity from small HPPs was around 957 million kWh, which is about 13% of the total generated electricity in Armenia (7315 million kWh).

As of the 1st of January, 2017 and according to the provided licenses, 39 additional SHPPs are under construction, with about total projected 74 MW capacity and 260 million kWh electricity annual supply.
